Tucked at the bottom of Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree — itself one of the most hidden areas in the game — Malenia, Blade of Miquella is the undefeated demigod who once fought Starscourge Radahn to a standstill. She is entirely optional, but for many players she is the true final boss. Beating her rewards roughly 480,000 runes and the Remembrance of the Rot Goddess, which you can trade for her weapon or a powerful incantation. What makes her so punishing is that she rewards your mistakes by healing — every dropped guard becomes momentum in her favour.
Rule One: She Heals on Contact
Malenia recovers health whenever she lands a hit, even if you block it with a shield. This single mechanic reframes the fight. Tanking her combos behind a shield, viable against many bosses, actively feeds her here. Dodge rather than block whenever possible, and punish only when you are certain the window is real. A clean, patient fight where she lands nothing is far safer than an aggressive one where you trade blows. Come in with at least 40 Vigor so a single mistake is not lethal.
Surviving Waterfowl Dance
Waterfowl Dance is the attack people lose to. Malenia leaps into the air and unleashes three flurries of sweeping slashes that track you across a huge area. There is no universal dodge, but two methods work. Up close, create distance the instant she leaps, then dodge through the first flurry toward her rather than away; the second and third are easier to read once you have survived the first. Alternatively, bait it from range — keep your distance, and when she leaps, sprint away from the first flurry entirely before re-engaging.
- When she jumps up, immediately stop attacking and build space before the first flurry lands.
- Roll into and slightly past her through each flurry, not directly backward.
- Keep stamina in reserve — getting caught mid-attack with no stamina to roll is fatal.
- If you have high-guard shield or a ranged option, a desperate block of the final hits beats eating the full combo.
Phase Two: The Goddess of Rot
When her first health bar empties she descends as the Goddess of Rot, and her attacks now spread Scarlet Rot. The arena fills with rot clouds, and her Scarlet Aeonia bloom builds the rot meter fast. Bring Preserving Boluses to cure rot buildup, and keep moving so the lingering clouds do not stack on you. Her moveset is similar enough that the lessons from phase one carry over — punish small openings, never her big combos, and always respect the leap.
Tools That Make It Easier
Malenia is beatable on any build, but some tools tilt the odds. A strong Spirit Ash such as the Mimic Tear splits her aggression and buys you room to heal and reposition. Bleed and frost build up status that bypasses her defences. Learning to land guard counters or jumping attacks during her recovery frames lets you stagger her into a critical hit. Above all, the real upgrade is patience: most Malenia victories come not from more damage, but from finally refusing to get greedy.
